Gender, Sexuality, and Identity
The Gender House Queer Arts Festival is a biannual, award-winning city festival that takes place in Aarhus. Founded in 2018 by artist Andreas Constantinou, the festival emerged from five years of artistic research developed through The Gender House Projects, a body of work exploring themes of gender, sexuality, and identity.
At the conclusion of this research period, Constantinou chose not to present a retrospective of his own work. Instead, he responded to a clear absence of visible platforms for queer artistic practices within the city’s cultural landscape. From this need for collectivity, representation, and shared space, The Gender House Queer Arts Festival was born.
Every two years, the festival activates theatres, museums, and cultural houses across Aarhus with a diverse programme of performances, exhibitions, and events by local, national, and international artists. The first edition spanned an entire month, becoming the city’s first queer arts festival to unite multiple cultural institutions in a collective effort to present a city-wide programme of queer art.
The festival highlights artistic practices that defy tradition and expand the boundaries of what performance and artistic expression can be. It prioritises work that is inherently queer—whether created by LGBTQIA+ artists or through artistic forms that challenge normative ideas of genre and cultural production. By doing so, the festival contributes to diversifying the cultural landscape of Aarhus and creating space for queer narratives, queer artistic expression, and queer voices.
To date, four editions of the festival have taken place. Each iteration intentionally redefines itself—emerging in different formats, durations, collaborations, and thematic frameworks. This approach ensures that the festival remains responsive, evolving with the artists, communities, and cultural conversations of the present moment.
