A lie without a Liar
2004
Based on the writings of Freud and Sartre, this piece is split into a prelude, Acts 1, 2, and 3. It looks at the Id, Ego and Super Ego, but focuses mainly on the Id, which comprises the unorganised part of the personality structure that contains the basic drives.
The id acts according to the "pleasure principle", seeking to avoid pain or unpleasure aroused by increases in instinctual tension.
The id in this piece is personified as a creature which becomes aware that it is being repressed. To enable the id to go out and achieve what it wants, it works to disguise itself, in fact it goes through several disguises dressing itself as an opera singer!
