THE GENDER HUT QUEER ARTS FESTIVAL is a comprehensive two-day event featuring a diverse program of LGBTQIA+ creative workshops, artist presentations, long table discussions, and performances.

This year’s festival centres around the theme of LGBTQIA+ visibility and the act of claiming space. As an LGBTQIA+ individual, the festival invites you to reflect on how your narrative is visible in the world and how you assert your presence in public spaces. The program is designed to explore these questions and examine how art can support and amplify LGBTQIA+ visibility.

At this year’s edition of THE GENDER HUT QUEER ARTS FESTIVAL, the possibilities for participation are endless. You can attend a poetry workshop that explores taking up space with words, a movement workshop about taking space with the body, or a visual arts workshop that explores taking space through visual representation.

For a thought-provoking discussion on the role of arts in LGBTQIA+ visibility and representation, you can join a peer to peer discussion between a selection of LGBTQIA+ artists and cultural leaders. And for a truly unique experience, you can participate in a large performance happening where hundreds of individuals come together to form a HUMAN QUEER QUILT, saturating an entire floor at ARoS Museum.

THE GENDER HUT QUEER ARTS FESTIVAL will take place on June 21-22nd at ARoS Museum and at Ridehuset, and serves as a warm-up festival for Aarhus Pride on June 24.

THE GENDER HUT QUEER ARTS FESTIVAL is the younger sibling of THE GENDER HOUSE QUEER ARTS FESTIVAL, a biannual event that presents an international program of queer performances and exhibitions in collaboration with leading theatres, museums and cultural houses in Aarhus. THE GENDER HUT focuses on nurturing local activities for local LGBTQIA+ communities and takes place each year between THE GENDER HOUSE FESTIVALS.

Real Princesses by Linn Haldrup Lorenzen (she/her)

Wednesday 21st of June
13.30-15.00: Workshop

15.00-16.00: Princess Parade
ARoS - Aros Allé 2, Aarhus
Sign up here

Part of Linn’s artistic practice is to take her old childhood drawings of princesses, and turn them into life as masks. Looking at her drawings as an adult, she realised that now, from a normative view, they would be characterised as monsters. That made her want to give them space as the real prinsesses they are.

In this crash workshop you will have the opportunity to make your own ‘real prinsess’ or whatever fantasy-figure you would like to claim your own version off. If you have an old childhood-drawing, bring it! And otherwise Linn has ways to generate imagery you can use. Afterwards you will take your masks for a walk in Aros Public. Read more about thel Real Princesses project here

Linn is concerned with disrupting stereotypes based on her experiences with chronic illness and queerness, which constantly challenges the boundaries of the visible and the invisible.

On the 21st of June HIMHERANDIT ask for your participation to become part of an artwork that involves hundreds of LGBTQIA+ persons becoming a magnificent HUMAN QUEER QUILT that saturates the entire buttom of ARoS Museum. Here all participants will unite, take space, and collectively lay down together to form a beautiful quilt of bodies and identities.

Collectively we will create a powerful performance art work where we lay down together, side by side and in the hundreds and become visible, take space, and support LGBTQIA+ realities.

We will lay down together for a total of 20 minutes while pre-recorded testimonies from LGBTQIA+communities are played through speakers across the entire museum halls. The testimonies are recordings capture from LGBTQIA+ persons from across Denmark and talk about experiences around: visibility, public safety, homophobia/transphobia, family, communities and ultimately what HOME, FREEDOM AND BELONGING mean to LGBTQIA+ persons today.

We enter the landscape and let the landscape enter us and our body to discover wild figures and images. We listen carefully to the hidden messages to burning issues of today’s society. It is a journey which demands a high level of focus, openness, curiosity and trust. Together, we play seriously in unlocking new archetypes of the landscapes. Maybe we together can unlock a common archetype of the landscape.

Linh Le will guide all the way during the workshop. Everyone is welcome and can participate. No qualifications needed.

Please bring water bottle and dress according to the weather.

We will be outside.
